The motive behind antagonist Iago’s plot is fuelled by his jealousy of Cassio. This theme of jealousy extends onto the protagonist Othello, with it being his fatal flaw which leads to his and Desdemona’s ultimate demise. In the opening scene, Iago begins manipulation of his first victim, Roderigo, who, like Iago, is also jealous of Othello. Iago reveals his jealousy through saying â€Å"One Michael Cassio, a Florentine, a fellow almost damnd in a fair wife; that never set a squadron in the field. † Here, Iago claims that he hates Othello because he selected Cassio to become his lieutenant, instead of himself. Iago claims that he is far more experienced and well suited for the position, in that Cassio has â€Å"never set a squadron in the field. † Iago is clearly jealous, and this is one of the main motives behind his plan to destroy Cassio and finally Othello. As jealousy begins to fall onto Othello as a result of Iago’s actions, Iago pretends to warm Othello to not be a jealous man, â€Å"O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on. This is also ironic because Iago is clearly the genuinely jealous character. Hence, this suggests that Iago is attempting to transfer his jealous feelings onto Othello, causing him to feel the same way as he himself does. Shakespeare also hints at the later events of the play, foreshadowing the downfall of Othello. Desdemona is clearly frantic when she found out that she had lost her handkerchief, when she expresses â€Å"Believe me, I had rather lost my purse full of crusadoes; and but my noble Moor is true of mind and made of no such baseness as jealous creatures are, it were enough to put him to ill thinking. She is nervous and unsure about how Othello will react, but she suggests that Othello is not of a jealous nature so there is no need to worry. The handkerchief is of great importance throughout the play. To Desdemona, the handkerchief is a symbol of Othello’s love. Iago manipulates the handkerchief so Othello sees it as a symbol of Desdemona’s faith and chastit y. Hence, the loss of the handkerchief not only symbolises the loss of Othello’s love and trust to Desdemona, but also, in Othello’s eyes, the loss of Desdemona’s faith chastity; triggering Othello’s strong feelings of jealousy. This foreshadows the climax of the play, where the audience finds out that Othello’s hamartia is his extreme jealousy, hence the loss of the handkerchief leads Othello to cause their ultimate demise. Othello is a study of the many ways in which jealousy can be provoked with mere circumstantial evidence, and how it can destroy people’s lives. In the play, jealousy takes many forms, from sexual suspicion to professional competition, but it is, in all cases, destructive. Characters in Othello use deceiving appearances to manipulate others in believing false occurrences. The theme of appearance versus reality is most relevant to the antagonist, Iago. Throughout the play, he is called â€Å"honest† by almost all other characters, including Othello. Thus Iago is appears to be trustworthy in the eyes of the protagonist. However in reality, as the audience knows, this is not the case. Instead, Iago is treacherous and manipulative. Shakespeare employs this use of dramatic irony throughout the play, emphasised in Iago’s numerous soliloquys to the audience. This results in the flaws of Othello’s character being highlighted – in that he is extremely gullible. Shakespeare also foreshadows the later events of the in the opening scene, when Iago says to Roderigo â€Å"I am not what I am. † At this point, the audience is aware of Iago’s antagonist purpose in Othello. A reversed misrepresentation is illustrated between the characters of Desdemona and Othello. Desdemona stays honest as to her innocence to Othello throughout their conflict, and again the audience knows of the truth. During this strife, Othello concludes â€Å"I think my wife be honest, and think she is not. This represents the climax of Othello’s confusion. Ultimately, Othello sees her as deceitful and impure, eventually leading to their demise. Moreover, this illustrates the complexity of the word â€Å"honest†; throughout the play the word is used for different meanings. In this instance, Othello uses â€Å"honest† to mean not only truthful, but also sexually chaste. The theme of appearance and reality is best illustrated by Iago and Desdemo na. Iago is consistently praised for his honesty; however the audience knows that the reality is far from honest. Desdemona, on the other hand, is constantly suspected for her dishonesty; but the audience knows that in reality she is honest. In Othello, the theme of loyalty and betrayal is most prominently communicated through the character of Iago; Iago has obviously betrayed Othello out of jealousy, even though Othello remains to believe that he is still loyal. In addition, this idea is also more subtly shown in the relationship between Othello and Desdemona. This can be seen when Othello becomes slightly reluctant to kill Desdemona when he enters their room. However, he says â€Å"Yet she must die, else shell betray more men,† to remind him of his original intention. Othello explains that Desdemona must be killed or else she will ‘betray’ more men. This is ironic as in reality; it is Othello who has betrayed Desdemona. Desdemona has remained loyal to Othello until her death. After Desdemona has been killed, Othello argues to Emilia that his murder was justified, for according to Othello, Desdemona was â€Å"like a liar, gone to burning hell: ‘Twas I that killed her†¦ She turned to folly, and she was a whore. Othello uses a simile to compare Desdemona to a liar, using imagery of â€Å"burning hell. † Furthermore, the use of a simile also suggests that Othello is beginning to realise the truth in Desdemona’s honesty, for he had previously called Desdemona a liar upfront, but now she is merely â€Å"like a liar. † Even so, Othello continues to call Desdemona by derogatory terms using insu lts such as â€Å"whore,† in order to hide the fact that it was he who betrayed his wife, not the other way around. In the finale, Othello is finally revealed the entirety of the truth. Othello describes himself as â€Å"Of one that loved not wisely, but too well† which symbolises that his love is so intense, passionate and fulfilling that he has a dramatic weakness for making mistakes and succumbing to jealousy and manipulation. He admits that he has indeed betrayed his wife. As a result Othello kills himself, thus symbolising that he will remain loyal to his wife, even after he had mistakenly murdered her. Shakespeare explores many forms of loyalty in Othello, including loyalty between friends, colleagues nd lovers. The idea of betrayal, and the consequences of it, is also examined throughout the play. Othello is a typical Shakespearean tragedy which depicts themes of jealousy, appearance versus reality, and finally loyalty and betrayal. One important part of growing could be affected by ADHD and it is cognitive development. Cognitive development is learned and is build upon throughout life. Studies have shown how the area of a social and academic aspect of cognitive development can be interrupted by ADHD. The first part of treating the disorder is to build cognitive strategies, which helps to recognize that there is an extreme problem with behavior. This should be a family involvement. Not only should the child know when ADHD is in control but the family needs to also know when not to add more stress to the child. The world family in this instance refers to anyone involved with this child. The family should also define what is not acceptable and what actions should take place after such behaviors are observed. As mentioned in the first part of this paragraph; the first step is to make the child aware of their behavior during all types of emotional experiences. For example the child needs to know how they act when ADHD takes control of them. The child needs to learn how this feels so that once it happens they will know how to control it rather than it (ADHD) controlling them (child). There are many ways to teach the child how to realize what type of behavior they are displaying. First practice was to use picture cards which show different mood or which displays different emotions. Another way was to use color word phrases such as red hot meaning very mad (Gottlieb, Shoaf Risa,2006, pg.55). The main idea behind this is for self recognition. This teaches the child how to label their emotions. Being able to know there is a behavioral problem before the problem and knowing what kind of emotion is being displayed is needed in order to make corrections. The first step to helping a child with ADHD is to accept that the child has a disorder. Most parents refuses to accept the disorder which creates more problems. Instead of trying to correct and replace negative behavior with right and positive behavior, the parent tries reinforcement or punishments which makes the child decrease or eliminate that action or reaction completely. That is not the outcome needed in order for that child to progress. Parents could start assisting their child with ADHD in everything, just to see when the child acts out, before the child enters a public setting. This way the parent could help the child replace that negative action or reaction with a positive action or reaction. Parents could try to sit and talk with the child find out what bothers them and how could it be fixed. This way the child has already faced whatever bothers them ahead of time. Self recognition of ADHD behavioral problems is followed by self corrections. Before making correction the family needs to explain how the reward of self correction works. Once the child continues to display such acceptable behavior then the rewarding such slowly subside. While correcting unacceptable or unexpected behavior more time and patience will be needed from the family. Once the family sees the child getting frustrated they should let the child known in a discrete way what type of behavior they are displaying. This is just to let the child know what type of behavior they are displaying. This is not to discourage the child. Once the child sees what type of mood they are exhibiting then show child things they could do in order to display a behavior much different than the current behavior. Teaching the child how to self recognize and self correct are cognitive strategies that will be needed in order to hold a respectful social interaction with peers. Once this is set in place the child will be able to recognize when they are beginning to get upset and before any unacceptable behavior is brought forth the child would administer self correction. If you were to compare and contrast going to a community college verses going to a university, they can be very different but also one in the same. Some similarities include activities and, class choices. Differences between these two subjects are class size, living, and cost. Going away to school can be a lot different from going to a community college, but in some ways they can be similar also. The first point in which I will discuss is class size. When going to a community college, the class sizes are much smaller than going to a university. With a small class size, it is easier to get more help understanding the subject because there aren’t so many students. Teachers can give their students more one on one attention this way. A similarity between community college and a university is that some universities do have smaller class sizes. There are some classes at universities that aren’t lectures, making class sizes smaller than the usual 100 or more students. Class size at a university is usually much larger because there are a lot more students, with fewer classes. The second point to make in regards to comparing going to a community college and going to a university is the costs are very different. At a university you are paying for all four years whereas at a community college, you only have to pay for a minimum of two years, which makes for saving a lot more money. At a community college, you don’t have to pay anywhere near what you have to pay at a university. Also, at a community college, you aren’t paying for dorm living, which adds on thousands more of dollars. The only similarity between these two different schools costs is the online classes. You have to pay for taking an online class, but of course with a university it will still cost a lot more. They both offer online classes however. Another similarity between going to a community college verses going to a university is you have to pay if you want to be on a sport team. Both schools require money. Participating in activities at school such as sports, clubs, and concert events can be different when going to a community college and a university. Some ways they can be different is at a community college, some based on the size, don’t have football teams. All universities have football teams and stadiums. Community colleges, since they are smaller don’t have big stadiums or a football team. Going along with not having football teams, this means that community colleges don’t have marching bands either. Also, universities have famous people who give concerts and community colleges don’t do that either. Some similarities between school activities are both schools have some kind of clubs where students can join groups and become friends with the people in their clubs. Both colleges offer clubs. They also both have music programs as in band or orchestra or chorus. Both colleges offer music in the music departments. They may not be as large of a group as a university, but they are still offered. As you can see, if you go to a community college you won’t be able to participate sometimes in football, or marching band. Also, if you attend a community college, you can save a lot of money from not living on campus. The other topic I mentioned was class size and how much smaller the class size is compared to a university. The differences between both colleges that I mentioned were at a university there are larger classes, football stadiums, dorm living, and you have to pay much more money for attending a university for four years. Finally, the last thing I talked about were how going to a community college and a university have some things in common such as both having chorus, band, and orchestra. Also, they both have online classes and similar subjects that a student can take. Both colleges have similar activities such as clubs and after school activities. Since attending a community is much smaller, and a university is much larger, there are going to be many differences between these two colleges. But since they are both colleges, there are some similarities between the two of course as well. Regardless, you can now see exactly what they have in common, and what they don’t more clearly now.
